To Drive or Not To Drive In The Cayman Islands?
Well... one thing tricky about this is you have to be 25 to rent a car in the Caymans. They drive on the left side of the road (or what I would like to call the wrong side..hehe, I can only say that though because my husband is from Ireland and we always argue about which one Is really the correct side of the road to drive on) and your steering wheel will most likely be on the opposite side of the car if you are from one of those countries that drives on the right ;) side.
If you can get over all of that, which really is not hard to do I would def recommend that you rent a car in the Caymans. You can of course take a taxi but there is something so nice about having the freedom of your own car rental.
The roads are super easy to get around even without a GPS, so long as you are not directionally challenged. The speed limits are pretty slow for the most part and there are only a handful of stoplights. You might want to brush up on your roundabout etiquette though because they do have their fair share in the Caymans. There is very rarely traffic and drivers seem to be pretty courteous.
If you do not rent a car you could miss out on all the great restaurants on the Island, or maybe you want to go swim with dolphins or do some shopping in Camana Bay?
your conundrum may be that it is such a small Island, why would I need a car? Yes, it is certainly a small Island, but it is packed with so much to do that you will be happier if you rent a car! You might as well go all out and if there is only two of you, rent a convertible and soak up that sun! Or if there are a whole bunch of you, get one of those trendy and giant Vans and ride in comfort. We like to rent from a local company called Marshalls, but there are a lot of options on the Island and I would suggest you book your car sooner than later as they seem to go fast, especially during the high season. Think Fall break, Christmas and spring break.
